KHONSA, Sep 27: Blending adventure with awareness, World Tourism Day 2026 was celebrated in Tirap district with a series of engaging activities that showcased the region’s natural charm while promoting sustainable, eco-friendly and responsible tourism.

The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Department of Urban Affairs, Tirap district, in observance of the occasion. This year’s theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” set the tone for the celebration, highlighting the role of technology and innovation in shaping the future of tourism.

A major highlight of the day was the trekking expedition to the picturesque San-Paa-Kong Trek near Kheti village. Located about 3 km from Kheti village and 6 km from Khonsa headquarters, the trail offered participants an immersive experience of Tirap’s lush greenery, serene surroundings and untapped eco-tourism potential.

The trek was led by Badonlum Tawsik, Deputy Commissioner, Tirap, along with Rigio Tabam, District Tourism Officer; Deksar Boje, Assistant Engineer (Urban Affairs); Walat Hondiq, Executive Engineer (RWD); administrative officers, staff from DC office, GPC Kheti village, content creators and trekking enthusiasts. The group was also joined by mountaineers Kampo Matey and Miatliam Wangsa. and Interacting with the participants, the Deputy Commissioner encouraged everyone to be responsible tourists—respecting nature, avoiding littering and preserving such pristine locations for future generations.

Adding a creative and contemporary touch, a photography and reel-making competition was also organised, encouraging participants to capture and share the unique beauty of the trek through digital platforms. The initiative not only highlighted the scenic appeal of the region but also aligned with the theme’s emphasis on digital outreach.

A Swachh Bharat Abhiyan activity further complemented the celebration, reinforcing the importance of cleanliness and environmental responsibility at tourist sites. The programme also served as a platform to sensitise participants and local communities on preserving the natural environment and adopting sustainable tourism practices.

The celebration reflected a growing recognition of Tirap’s tourism potential and the need to develop it responsibly while leveraging digital tools and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to enhance visitor experiences and promote lesser-known destinations.

The programme concluded on an optimistic note, with a collective resolve to protect the district’s rich natural and cultural heritage and to position Tirap as a vibrant and sustainable tourism destination. (DIPRO)
