Training on mushroom cultivation held in Jemeithang

JEMEITHANG, Jul 17: A one-day training programme on Oyster and Shiitake mushroom cultivation was organised in Jemeithang on Friday to promote sustainable livelihoods and enhance farmers' income. The programme witnessed the participation of 54 farmers, including members of various Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
District Horticulture Officer Koncho Gyatso conducted a hands-on training session on oyster mushroom cultivation, covering substrate preparation, spawning, harvesting and post-harvest management. He described oyster mushroom cultivation as a low-investment, short-duration and high-return enterprise, encouraging farmers to adopt it as an additional source of income.
Block Coordinator of ArSRLM, Tenzin Yangzom, delivered a technical session on Shiitake mushroom cultivation, highlighting scientific production methods, environmental requirements and the market potential of the premium mushroom. She encouraged SHGs to take up mushroom cultivation as a group-based livelihood activity.
To facilitate adoption of the technology, mushroom cultivation kits containing oyster mushroom spawn, polybags, paddy straw and other essential inputs were distributed to all participants.
The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers sought guidance on cultivation practices, disease management, marketing and value addition. Participants appreciated the practical demonstrations and expressed their willingness to start mushroom cultivation in their villages.
Officials said the initiative is expected to promote entrepreneurship, nutritional security and sustainable income generation while supporting diversification of horticultural activities in the district. (DIPRO)
