Tawang, Sep 25: An Artificial Insemination (AI) programme for yaks and cattle was organised by the Indian Army in collaboration with the ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (NRC-Yak), Dirang, Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, and District Administration, Tawang, at Tsachin near Bumla, Kumrotser near Taktsang gonpa and Mera GG towards Chema.

The initiative is aimed at improving the genetic quality and productivity of the yak population and addressing the problem of inbreeding depression. Continued inbreeding can adversely affect traits such as body size, milk production and disease resistance. The Artificial Insemination programme is expected to contribute towards healthier and more productive yak herds while also supporting efforts to increase the yak population in the district.

Principal Scientist Dr. Vijay Paul and Dr. Mukhtar from NRC-Yak, OC RVC, Tawang along with veterinarians from the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Tawang, were involved in carrying out the Artificial Insemination process.

District Veterinary Officer, Tawang, Dr. Thuptan Tashi appealed to the Brokpas and yak herders of the district to come forward and avail themselves of the opportunity. He informed that Artificial Insemination involves considerable cost for individual herders, while the present initiative is being provided free of cost with the support of the Indian Army.

He further highlighted that wider adoption of scientific breeding practices would help improve  the health, productivity and population of yaks in Tawang district and contribute towards sustaining the traditional yak-rearing livelihood of the Brokpa community.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tawang, Rinchin Leta; Commanding Officer, Lungrola Battalion; Assistant Commissioner Nawang Thutan; DVO Tawang Dr. Thuptan Tashi; DHO Koncho Gyatso; Veterinary Officer Dr. Sang Khandu; and Registering Officer APB & OCWWB Phurpa Tsering attended the programme and witnessed the Artificial Insemination process at Tsachin.

The collaborative initiative reflects the collective efforts of the Indian Army, scientific institutions, District Administration and line departments towards promoting scientific livestock management and supporting the livelihoods of yak herders in the high-altitude areas of Tawang district.
